THE KANSKI LECTURE: AI and its likely impact on optometry and ophthalmology

The Kanski Lecture has been named in honour of Jack Kanski who passed away in 2019. Jack was one of the world’s foremost optical educationalists, having created the most popular ophthalmic textbooks, illustrations and clinical atlases. Jack will be sorely missed but his work will live on forever, with ophthalmologists, optometrists and optical professionals from around the world remembering his priceless contributions to the field. The inaugural Kanski Lecture will be on AI and its likely impact on optometry and ophthalmology. Pearse Keane will describe how optometry and ophthalmology are at the forefront of many new technologies. The session will describe the collaboration between Moorfields Eye Hospital and Google Health on how the latest advances in artificial intelligence (AI) will transform the diagnosis and treatment of people with sight-threatening eye diseases.

1. Describe the latest advances in AI

2. Describe potential applications of AI in optometry and ophthalmology

3. Describe how AI is currently being implemented in community and hospital settings.

Live Surgery with Professor Sunil Shah

Technology is transforming the optical industry. One of the best examples is how technology has helped laser surgery operate with enhanced precision and accuracy. Femto-Second Laser Cataract Surgery is an advanced type of cataract surgery that uses laser technology to try and improve precision and accuracy. Laser technology simply tries to give you perfectly clear vision without glasses or contact lenses, emitting optical pulses in femto-seconds, which is 1 millionth of 1 billionth of a second!

During this session, you will be able to watch Professor Shah perform surgery, live streamed from Midland Eye, followed by a Q&A. Professor Shah will also be joining us at Optrafair later in the afternoon, and will be available for one-on-one discussions within Profs Corner.

Professor Sunil Shah, Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon, Birmingham and Midland Eye Centre
