What do we need to know in order to support healthy ageing in the eye?

Dr Lisa Chakrabarti, University of Nottingham: 1 interactive CET point

Ageing is inevitable and usually associated with physical decline. However, this is varied process that occurs over many decades. Why is it that some people enjoy excellent eye health in their later years and others are diagnosed with age-related disease such as AMD? Our lab is interested in understanding normal healthy ageing and using that knowledge to support longer healthspan in the brain and the eye. We are specifically looking at the energetic processes in eye tissues to see whether we can support the metabolic status of the eye to remain healthy for as long as possible.
